The finished design for the mural was inspired by the work of artist John Dyer and incorporates themes of the local environment as well as the many circular architectural features found around the new school building.
The week started with a visit and painting workshop from John Dyer who inspired the children with his lively approach to colour and composition. Every child then produced a Cornish landscape of their own which will be displayed at the official opening of the school in September.
Devoran headteacher Carol Breakwell said: “We feel so privileged to have been able to spend a day working with John Dyer and then through the week with Jacqueline. It has made an enormous difference to the children’s creativity and motivation to work with such inspiring artists.”
The whole mural was then pieced together like a giant jigsaw puzzle and will be extremely effective once it is on the wall. On completion the two metre diameter mural made from Cornish clay will be positioned in pride of place by the school entrance.
The school will be officially opened by John Dyer in September 2008

Even though he and his wife Joanne Short are currently resident artists at The Hanbury Gardens in the South of France he still responded positively to a request to support the school’s GREEN CAMPAIGN. Long time supporter of the environment, John was only too pleased to submit a beautiful design for our organic cotton bags. The bags symbolise our commitment to becoming a sustainable school, whilst providing a useful means of raising awareness of global issues in the local community.”
King Charles School.

“This has been a great project to be involved in, the school is really trying to engage the children with the environment - they even have their own acre of rainforest ! I exchanged emails about the design and also the benefits of organic cotton before I submitted my ideas to the children. For me the bag needed to have the essence of Cornish fresh air, Plant diversity and Seaside fun in the environment and the result looks great !”
John Dyer

The bags are on sale now from the school
http://web.mac.com/kingcharles1/kingcharles1/Home.html

We provide 2 Sea King helicopters for a wide range of SAR missions, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While we are primarily established for military rescues, 95% of our “trade” is civilian – be it at sea, on the coast or inland; this involves some 250 rescues every year. Naturally, we have established many strong links with Cornwall - and we are keen to put something back into this community, both in our work and our play. So we were looking for a charity project which would not only help Cornwall but would also be something the Squadron members could identify with. Our Squadron Boss, Lt Cdr Chris Godwin and his wife Louise, have recently suffered the tragic loss of their baby son, Colton, to Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Colton’s illness lasted for some time during which he gradually lost neural function – which was clearly very difficult for Chris and Louise to cope with. But they had just the most brilliant support from Children’s Hospice South West during Colton’s last few months and he died peacefully on 7th of August in Little Bridge House hospice, near Barnstaple in North Devon. So when Children’s Hospice South West announced plans to set up a hospice in Cornwall, we realised that here was a really worthwhile project for 771 Squadron to support - not only for Cornwall but also for Colton’s memory.

771 Squadron has organised a Dinner and Auction in aid of Children’s Hospice South West’s “Precious Lives” Appeal, which will be held in the Wardroom of RNAS Culdrose on 8 March 2008; it will be a Royal Naval formal Mess Dinner followed by a charity auction with a wide range of donated prizes and celebrity memorabilia. We are looking to auction some items on local radio and in the Cornish Newspapers, opening up the bidding to a wider audience and hopefully making more money for such a worthwhile cause. By clicking on the ‘Auction Items’ button at the top of this page you may access and bid on the list of prizes. Alternatively email your final bid to Louise_godwin@btinternet.com
The bid must be your best offer and be submitted by midday on Friday 7th March; the winner will be notified on Monday 10th. We hope you will enter into the spirit of goodwill that this appeal is generating as we are sure you will agree, this will be a unique opportunity to fund an extremely worthwhile cause.
There are a limited number of places at the Dinner/Auction still available. Tickets are priced at £50 each which will include all food, complimentary drinks and an evenings entertainment, with the England cricketer Marcus Trescothick as our guest of honour. If you are interested in attending please contact us at 771so@culdrose.mod.uk and we will provide you with more details and availability.

His fun and humorous vision of Cornwall is well known - splay footed seagulls being his signature subject. For this latest collection he has painted a series of work from Tresco to Falmouth that share a celebratory feel for the festive season. Christmas tree’s and carols, crackers and lights thread through his colourful compositions. These are paintings that make you smile – a reaction all too often forgotten in the high brow art world. For John and his devoted audience they know that a smile means a lot.

‘Magical Christmas Art Exhibition’ by John Dyer and Joanne Short opens 8th December at The John Dyer Gallery in Falmouth - Online & by Appointment. This is a real Eden with the roof off experience and a painters dream environment. We really hope that the combination of touring the gardens before previewing our new exhibition of paintings will be an unforgettable experience and that you will be able to connect to our vision by becoming immersed in the pure spectacle of the Côte d'Azur. Our new paintings will be the combination of a years work and will be released at the same moment that the gardens are at their peak."

The Hanbury Gardens at Mortola in Italy cover an area of approximately 18 hectares and tumble down towards the sparkling sea. They are at their peak in the first week of April and are cultivated with exotic and Mediterranean plants which have survived a remarkable history. The garden was founded in 1867 by Sir Thomas Hanbury and is one of the most important botanic gardens in Europe. Carolyn Hanbury is resident at the gardens and it is planned that she will be available to talk to Eden friends about the history of this fascinating garden during the tour.

The second garden is in Menton in France. Clos du Peyronnet is a much smaller garden but is one of Menton's most famous. Planted by three generations of the Waterfield family and designed to be painted this garden offers a sumptuous array of plants. William Waterfield will be on hand for a tour of the garden. It is the only garden in Menton to have remained the private property of a family which have been tending it with passion since the beginning of the century and it is a very special place.

Exhibition dates to be confirmed.
An exhibition titled "Happy Summer Paradise" has been on tour in nine of Japan's most prestigious gallery spaces across these cities and John Dyer made personal appearances at six of the venues.

One of the galleries is in the world famous 'Matsuya' store in the Ginza district of Tokyo. This store and the district are the equivalent of Park Avenue in New York and is the center for business and high quality retail and art outlets.
"This has been a fantastic experience for me - people have travelled from all over Japan to meet me on the tour and it has been incredibly interesting to listen to my new Japanese collectors discussing my work. We have launched a vibrant new range of limited edition prints in Japan to accompany the exhibition and the images of St Ives and the Helford Passage are very popular. Many collectors are buying my print of the Helford Passage with a yellow sky to hang on the west wall of their homes as in Japan a yellow sky hung on the West will will bring the family good fortune." John Dyer
"The Japanese are very familiar with the UK, London and Harry Potter but they have never come across Cornwall before so this has been an amazing opportunity to promote Cornwall as a destination. We are sure that many people from Japan will now be looking into traveling to Cornwall as a holiday destination to track down the famous John Dyer Seagulls and the amazing tropical plants that grow here. With nine galleries in the top retail locations in Japan actively promoting John's work and Cornwall as a destination this is bound to have an impact." The John Dyer Gallery.
"We are delighted with the work of John Dyer, in Japan we usually promote western artists for 3 to 5 years before embarking on a tour, but in the case of John's work this has been put together in under a year due to the popularity of his unique style of work. We already have plans to expand the range and we have commissioned the artist to paint a new painting called 'St Ives Happy New Year' that we will launch in December" Art Director of Hibell
John travelled to Japan with his family and his wife, artist Joanne Short. The John Dyer Gallery will be exhibiting works inspired from this trip towards the end of this year and the exhibition will include work from both John and Joanne. The artists found the blend of culture, ancient temples, geisha and the high tech skyscrapers fascinating. While in Japan the family also experienced an earthquake and narrowly missed the largest cyclone Japan has ever seen in July.

Tour dates and venues
July 14th Sat Daimara - Kyoto
79 Shijo Takakura
Shimogyo-ku
Kyoto-city 600-8511

July 15th Sun Daimara - Kobe /Hyogo
40 Akashi-cho
Kobe-city
Hyogo 650-0037

July 16th Mon Umeda - Osaka
3-1-1 Umeda
Kita-ku
Osaka-city 530-8202

July 20st Fri Tobu - Ikebukuro - Tokyo
1-1-25 Nishi Ikebukuro
Toshima-ku
Tokyo 171-0021

July 21st Sat Tokyu - Kichijoji -Tokyo
2-3-1 Kichijoji-Honmachi
Musashino-city
Tokyo 180-8519

July 22nd Sun Matsuya -Ginza -Tokyo
3-6-1 Ginza
Chuo-ku
Tokyo 104-0061

The picture is very relevant to our children, as we also are a seaside community, albeit of a very different nature. Our backdrop is a commercial and military harbour, with several large marinas, and numerous sailing clubs. There is a good fish market on the other side of the harbour, but this is a long way outside many of our children’s experience. They are used to seeing huge warships and cross-channel ferries, plus large numbers of pleasure craft as constant traffic in the harbour and Solent, but have no experience of the sort of sea-going community which John’s paintings portray.

We are anxious that our children are exposed to different ways of life and cultures within their own country as well as overseas, and we are hoping that our Arts Week will help to address that.

We have a wide range of activities planned:

•Continuing the picture to left or right
•Reproducing seagulls in John Dyer’s style
•Learning about the history of sea fishing
•Writing from the perspective of a seagull
•Looking at communities such as Mousehole, Newlyn and Porthleven
•Finding out about the RNLI
•Making Cornish pasties
•Eating cream teas
•Learning sea shanties – the list goes on….
All of the celebrity runners are depicted in the painting with Bill Bryson being easy to spot in his yellow top with 'Bill' on his shirt. Jenny Agutter can also be spotted on the left of the painting and is that Charlie Dimock floating topless out in the bay !

Dara O'Kearney who won the race can be seen in the front of the painting celebrating with number 86 on his shirt.

The Tresco Marathon came in to being seven years ago when Peter Hingston and then Island Hotel manager Philip Callan decided that they would like to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, as Peter's daughter Jade, now aged eight, suffers from this debilitating and life-shortening disease. Total funds raised to date exceed £300k.

"The Tresco marathon was such an amazing and fun event to watch and paint. The island is a very challenging place to run around, but the support that the runners get from the community and the Tresco estate is fantastic. It was a real joy painting this and I hope that it comes to epitomize this amazing event." John Dyer.
It is hoped that at some point prints of the painting might be made available to support the Cystic Fibrosis trust, but in the first instance the artist, The John Dyer Gallery and the Island Hotel on Tresco are all delighted that this painting will now be on public display for all of the runners to enjoy and to take inspiration from.
The Tresco Estate have a number of John Dyer original paintings; with two of the largest hung at the heliport on the island.

Measuring nearly six feet by eight feet, the colourful work was unveiled last week by Restormel Borough Council Mayor Denise Mutton in the presence of the 32 artists who produced it.

The painting is a 'jigsaw' reproduction of a work called Bulb Mania by the Eden Project's painter in residence John Dyer.

The original painting was photographed, blown up in size, and then divided, so that different people could copy different sections of the painting on individual canvases.

Support worker Shelley Law, who is based at Waterloo House in St Mawes, developed the project in response to Mencap's appeal for its homes to do something special to mark the charity's 60th anniversary this year.

Residents from seven of the county's Mencap homes were involved in the painting, but last week was the first time that any of them had seen the whole painting come together.

Fellow support worker Julie Hitchings said the artists were thrilled to recognise their individual paintings in the finished work.

"Everyone put a lot of work into the project and it was amazing how quick the artists were to spot their contribution. It was a great thing to do and everyone enjoyed it," she said.

The work will be displayed in the Education Centre at the Eden Project until Sunday, April 15.

The artists have decided the painting should afterwards be auctioned to raise money for the BBC's Children In Need appeal.
