Artist John Dyer, the resident artist for Darwin 200 visits Newquay Zoo in Cornwall as part of his residency.
One of the most memorable animal/artist encounters was captured on video by the artist's daughter Martha-Lilly.
This HD short film captures the artist at work and the interactions between father,daughter and lemur !

Painting the Peruvian Potato Harvest

Edited Version focusing on painting.  Artist John Dyer, resident artist for Darwin 200 and Eden Project Painter in Residence, continues his exploration of the worlds major staple foods. Working as resident artist for the International Center for the Potato in Peru, CIP, John travels to the far south of the country and to altitudes of 14000 feet to explore the ethnobotanical relationships behind the potato plant. Painting on location in the fields where the potato originated John brings to us the fascinating culture and imagery connected to this major food source.

Peru, the story behind the paintings

Video Diary: John Dyer has just completed a new set of ethnobotanical paintings exploring the harvest of the worlds 4th staple food the potato. This film is a video diary of John’s adventure and shows in great detail the length of time and research that goes into the paintings. Working as artist in residence for the international organisation CIP in Peru the video diary takes us from Lima to Cusco, Puno and Lake Titicaca 4000 meters up in the Andes. The video shows John’s search for his subject, the local people and cultures, landscape and footage of the paintings being realised as the harvest is gathered.

John traveled to the center of the potato world on an island 4000 meters up near the border with bolivia to explore the landscape, culture and people surrounding one of the world’s most important plants.

Darwin 200 BIG Art Competition and Exhibition of Children’s Paintings

 Calling all young artists !
 See your art on The John Dyer Gallery and on display at the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall and Newquay Zoo.

We would like you to create a picture based on Darwin's voyage and discoveries.   This could be a painting of the Tall Ship HMS Beagle sailing into Falmouth or at an exotic location, or perhaps you could paint a picture of the animals at your local Zoo. The possibilities are endless !  Please get your parents permission and then take a fantastic digital photograph of your picture - straight and well lit.  Email your photograph to us before July 2009 and in the subject line of the email type your name, age and title, size and medium of the picture.

Galerie Monaco - Singing and Zinging Exhibition Opening

Exhibition private view event in Monaco and Flute Concert by the Conservatoire of Music, Menton. Artists John Dyer and Joanne Short exhibited their new collection of paintings on June 14th 2008 with a complimentary concert by the Flute Orchestra of the Conservatoire of Music from Menton.

The exhibition was held in the sumptuous setting of the Belle Epoque Hôtel Hermitage in Central Monaco.

Guests were invited to the two hour event in Monaco to see the new paintings and to hear the flute music whilst enjoying a glass of chilled rose wine.

Collectors from the UK flew down for the event which was well attended by both the French and British.

“A spectacular collection of new paintings exploring the colours and life along the Côte d'Azur. The result of an extraordinary artists' residency painting at the Giardini Hanbury and living in the South of France during the past year.”

Biodiversity Art - John Dyer

 An introduction to the art of John Dyer and some of the ecological projects and partners he has worked with.

"The arts, in their broadest sense, are fundamental to Eden. We aim to blur the perceived line between the creative and the scientific and use art to illustrate the vital link between plants and people. John Dyer is the painter in residence for the Eden Project in Cornwall. John has worked with the project from the year 2000 to the present day and has not only recorded the planting of the biomes but has travelled across the world to study the plants in their natural habitats.

The Eden Project have used John's work to help to tell their 'plant people' stories and a major exhibition was held for world food day in October 2002 of his italian crop paintings. John's work continues with Eden as he works towards his 'Crops Project' exhibition. And in 2004 John exhibited 'Rice is Life' at the project."

Watch John Dyer paint Banrock Station, home of the famous eco-wine. John explores the area and wildlife through his vibrant paintings. Banrock Station & Hardy Wines of South Australia arranged with the Eden Project to invite John Dyer to paint their amazing wetland and wine center. John, the painter in residence at the Eden Project in the UK, is recognised as one of the leading environmental artists of his time. John spent his time with station manager Tony Sharley and captured the teaming wildlife and the spirit of this conservation project.

Painting the Rice Harvest, Philippines. IRRI.

This film shows John at work in the landscape of the Philippines as the rice is harvested around him.

During April 2004 John Dyer was the resident artist at the International Rice Research Institute at Los Banos in the Philippines for the United Nations International Year of Rice.
